Converting it from army to comfort!

Creature comfort Posted on Fri, May 18, 2012 15:47:33

We like the “no-nonsense” military looks and works of the car, but as we are planning to live in it for extended periods we need a little bit of luxury smiley
We are the 2. owners since the Swedish Army – the previous owner did do some soundproofing and changed the green wood interior to some black felt, but we thought it was a bit to dark. Therefore we bought 12 meters of fake tan leather and we are now slowly working our way through the car.
All surfaces are covered with bitumen for sound deadening and to remove noise from panels vibrating. Then a layer of PE-foam for sound and heat isolation and then 6mm plywood with 2mm of felt and at last 2mm of tan leather, giving it a nice feel to the touch.

Until now only the front cabin has been done.Still needs to build a box for the car-stereo, speakers and switch-panel for lights, fans and so on.

1975 Volvo C304/TGB 13 6×6

The vehicle Posted on Fri, May 18, 2012 14:47:06

The vehicle is a Volvo C304/TGB 13 6×6 from 1975.
It has been in service in the Swedish Army until 2008 and is one of the rare “Alu-Zink” versions. In the 1990’s the army decided to prolong the use of these offroadbeasts and therefore replaced the bodies with new ones made of aluminum and zink plated steel.
So although the car is nearly 40 years old there isn’t a single spot of rust!

The Volvo is very rugged and simple with 6×6 and vacuum opereted diff lockers on all 3 axles, hi/low gear and portal axles which gives a whooping 40cm of ground clearance!
Equipped with a OM603 Diesel engine it drives wery well, allthough a bit noisy…

A special thing about this car is that it is possible to take off the upper half of all 5 doors and open the windscreen in the drivers side – making it much more fun going to some of the hotter places around the world. AND there is a gunners-hatch in the roof 🙂
